What does it mean to be a good child? Through intimate stories of Chinese Canadian families across generations, GOOD CHILDREN explores the unspoken expectations, sacrifices and enduring bonds between parents and their children.

The story

In Chinese culture, there is a word: xiào (孝). Often translated as filial piety, it describes a child’s lifelong responsibility to honour and care for their parents. But what does it mean to be a good child in a changing world?

Set against the backdrop of Vancouver, GOOD CHILDREN follows Chinese Canadian families navigating the delicate balance between tradition and independence, duty and desire, love and sacrifice.

From the pressures of adolescence and the expectations of parenthood to the difficult decisions that come with caring for aging parents, the series explores how these deeply rooted values shape our lives across generations.

Intimate, observational and deeply human, GOOD CHILDREN asks a universal question: How much of ourselves do we owe to the people who raised us?
